Clinical Usefullness

The 17-hydroxyprogesterone test is used to detect and/or evaluate Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). The most common cause of CAH is a partial or complete lack of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. More severe forms of CAH can cause serious complications in newborns, including dehydrationlow blood pressure, and abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) with aldosterone and cortisol deficiencies. Due to excess androgens virilization of female babies may occur with ambiguous genitalia.
