The 17-hydroxyprogesterone test is used to detect and/or evaluate Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). The most common cause of CAH is a partial or complete lack of the enzyme 21-hydroxylase. More severe forms of CAH can cause serious complications in newborns, including , , and abnormal heartbeat () with aldosterone and cortisol deficiencies. Due to excess androgens virilization of female babies may occur with ambiguous genitalia.
